ADVENTURE

Camping

Camp is the place I learned problem solving and how to overcome life’s challenges, and enjoy them too!

Views

Sunrises, sunsets, mountains, skylines… I’ll do just about anything if there is something pretty to see at the end!

Music

Concert tickets force me to make time for work-life balance; suddenly listening to an artist is “productive” and “studying!

Camp Arrowhead

An overnight camp for children 6-16 years old, located on the Rehoboth Bay in Delaware

No phones, no air conditioning, just kids being kids!

Have you ever said, “Kids these days are too soft”? As a counselor I set out on a mission to keep camp craft alive, teaching my campers (and myself) the worthwhile journey of doing something hard and problem solving on the fly.

LASHING

I consider this the art of MacGyvering: “You have twine, make something.” Lashing is just fastening things together properly, so projects could be as simple as a bench or a complicated project the group works on over weeks to complete!

Pictured above: Playground with a raised platform, ladders, functioning slide, monkeybars, and (not pictured) multiple swingsets! Made by a great group of incredibly dedicated/driven/obsessed 12 year old girls 🙂

CAMP FOOD

There’s nothing quite like building a fire, and growling stomachs raise the stakes. I love a challenge and love cooking so I was always trying out crazier and more fun recipes. Even when the weather didn’t agree with the meal I’d planned, creativity and persistence almost always beat weather (ask me about the 3 rotisserie chickens…)

WHAT PLANT?

I would teach and quiz my campers about various plants and what they were good to use for. Pictured is the “final exam” I gave one group. Can you identify the plant at the bottom of this image? Answer below.

HiddenAnswer

A PINEAPPLE!

Paying homage to a prankster counselor in the 80’s, I too woke up early to bury this fruit. Worth it for the opportunity to dramatically uproot the thing, and the sweet addition to our stir fry!

Dating back to the early 1900s, we have a rich and active alumni network. There are multiple generations of families (and dogs) at every reunion!
